On October 4, 2024, removal of a section of the slate roof was begun at Newton Highlands Congregational Church. This was the first step in a week-long chimney and roof repair project organized by Building Manager Yoko Bryden.
The steps in the project were as follows:
- Remove 6’ of slates around the chimney and save them for re-use
- Furnish and install ice and water shield over the open area
- Reinstall slates, replacing any broken ones with new slates matching size, color and thickness
- Remove debris
The work was performed by Bostonian Brickworks and GR Brothers, and the cost was $15,000-$16,000. An area in the front of the church sanctuary was affected.
The workers found some holes over the copper chimney cap where daylight is visible through the cap from below. Those are marked with red circles in the photo gallery and may require additional repairs.
