Palm Sunday meets Pledge Sunday

Jesus was willing to give his life to reveal his commitment to non-violence.

The Reverend Dr. Ken Baily

Energetic children assembled in the narthex at Newton Highlands Congregational Church, UCC, on Sunday, March 29, 2026, to gather fistfuls of palms. To the tune of “All Glory, Laud and Honor,” they made their way down the sanctuary aisle, distributing the palms to congregants.

Longtime member Bill Lowery turned his palms into a cross before the service was over.

The Reverend Dr. Ken Baily began his meditation by referring back to his recent sermons about blindness (“In scripture, blindness means that you can’t see what’s right in front of you”) and insults (“When Jesus insults people, it’s usually when they are full of themselves”).

He spoke about being so moved by a something that one would stand up and walk out, and he asked, “What would it represent for you to walk out of here and follow Jesus?”

Children gathered on the chancel steps for a message about Jesus’ walk into Jerusalem, with palms and robes laid on the ground.

Fellowship time included gold-trimmed paper goods and celebratory foods marking Pledge Sunday — an egg dish made by Alex Bezdek and fruit salad and hot cross buns made by Sally Brickell.
