So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
Matthew 17:20
The Reverend Dr. Jessica McArdle preached on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at Newton Highlands Congregational Church, about facing adversity. She likened tumultuous times to a Winslow Homer painting of a fisherman alone in a small boat, struggling in rough seas.
“As citizens of the world and our nation, we are facing the ‘perfect storm,’ politically, economically, environmentally,” she stated. “Still, the Gospel’s message is one of hope, giving us a path forward even when we feel we are at our wit’s end.”
“Having faith can be countercultural,” she said. “Yet we’re not powerless; we need to do what we can, and we need to have a mustard-seed kind of faith.”
Organist Yevgenia played the three movements of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Sonata in C major during the service, concluding with Movement 3 for the postlude.
