Konbit Santé: Community health in Haiti

For many years Newton Highlands Congregational Church, UCC, has had a friendly connection to Konbit Santé, the largest hospital in the second largest city in Haiti, Cap Haitian. This “Community Health” center has grown and flourished away from earthquakes and gang violence. It was founded in 2001 by a friend of Ken Baily.

In February 2025 it lost all of its USAID funding for vaccines, medications and, in particular, for the workers who educated and assisted pregnant women before, during, and after childbirth. The effects were immediate — imagine losing basic maternal and infant care. But there’s more: these trained workers earn $200/month. And there were nine of them. And they were sustaining life. Perhaps NHCC could re-hire some.

Lay organizers at NHCC intend to welcome Konbit Santé staff, from Maine, for a presentation that is not yet scheduled. We are working to learn more, including how we can help. If you would like to learn more please contact us. This may be a connection and a concern where we can “do something,” and truly save lives. More to come.
