NHCC welcomes new members Tann Scott and Lynn Shields

The June 4, 2023, service included a welcoming ceremony for two new members–Tann Scott and Lynn Shields.

Tann Scott

I started coming to NHCC in January 2022, and it has been amazing and welcoming.

I come from a Methodist church, and I was trained as a social worker. My background is in healthcare and retail. Visual retail is my passion and my love!

Lynn Shields

I grew up in a suburb just outside Buffalo, New York, where I attended a Methodist church. My first career in Buffalo was as a special education teacher working with kids with learning and behavioral issues.

I moved to Boston a couple of years after college and continued to work in that field until I decided to go to graduate school at the New School for Social Research in New York City to study Policy Analysis and Economics while working full-time doing tenant and community organizing where I
lived in Washington Heights in northern Manhattan, advocating for affordable housing and tenantsā€™ rights.

When I finished my graduate work, I came back to Boston to work in affordable housing as a developer in a handful of projects and then focused solely on lending to developers in my work at the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development and then with Mass Housing, a quasi-public lender. Both entities provide loans with favorable terms to developers in exchange for a legal commitment to restrict a set number of the units in each project receiving these loans pursuant to strict renter affordability criteria. I retired in June 2021 but continue to follow what is being done to provide more much-needed affordable housing in Massachusetts.

I have a daughter who lives in Houston with her dog and her boyfriend, a brother in Vermont, and a brother who has lived all his life near where we grew up.

I have looked for a church for what feels like a long time and I am very happy to have found this one. It feels like home. Thank you all for the warm welcome I have received. I look forward to the future at NHCC.
