How does the lack of affordable housing impact the retention and recruitment of good teachers?
Dramatic changes in the housing market have left many educators in an unwinnable race for one of our most basic needs: an affordable place to live. Many of our teachers have a long commute because they can’t afford housing in Newton or nearby.
At this free session, Dr. Heather Peske, president of the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), will discuss a recently released an analysis of teacher pay and housing costs across the country and discuss the implications for Newton’s teachers and community.
Dr. Peske comes to NCTQ from her role as Senior Associate Commissioner for Instructional Support in the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, where she implemented policies and programs relating to teacher development, educator preparation, and curriculum and instruction. She earned her master’s degree and doctorate in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She started her career in education as a 4th grade teacher.
