Biblical acts of courage explored on MLK Sunday

The Reverend Dr. Susan Cartmell discussed the power of Biblical stories to inspire hope and courage in her meditation on Sunday, January 19, 2025. As she recounted the story of teenage-shepherd David facing off against a Philistine soldier, she explained, “The Bible tells stories from the persepctive of the underdog–people on the bottom.”

“The entire Bible highlights the cause of justice,” she added.

The choir sang “We Believe That This Is Jesus.”

After discussing the significance of Dr. Martin Luther King in the sanctuary, children gathered to read and discuss The Youngest Marcher, a book about Audrey Faye Hendricks, who was the youngest known child arrested for participating in a civil rights protest.

The postlude was March Solennelle (J. Callaerts), played by organist Yevgenia Semeina.
