He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8
In his meditation Communion meditation on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the Reverend Dr. Ken Baily called on congregants at Newton Highlands Congregational Church, UCC, to break out of a cycle of cynicism.
“Our congregational ancestors heard God call them forth to community, equality, and democracy — as a theoretical expression of the scriptures they loved,” he stated.
He explained the Hebrew prophet Micah’s three steps for getting out of a messy situation of corruption and moral decay, as follows:
- Admit guilt (“Few are guilty, but all are responsible.” (Rabbi Heschel))
- Stick with God.
- Pray and work for deliverance.
Deacons Joy Huber and Tann Scott assisted with the service.

For the postlude, organist Yevgenia Semeina played “Postlude in D” (A. Hollins).
Director of Christian Education Wendy Donnell was treated to a rendition of “Happy Birthday” during fellowship time.
