Six UCC parishes gather for summer service

More than 90 people from six local United Church of Christ parishes gathered at Newton Highlands Congregational Church, UCC (NHCC), for a shared service and sacred meal on Sunday, August 3, 2025.

Rabbi Allison Berry preached a sermon entitled “Running Toward Welcome,” and several pastors helped lead the service. with participation from pastors of Newton’s UCC churches and Newton Presbyterian Church. 

Rabbi Berry is director of the Betty Ann Greenbaum Miller Center for Jewish Healing at Jewish Family & Children’s Service and former co-senior rabbi at Temple Shalom, West Newton.

Participating congregations were The Eliot Church of Newton, Newton Highlands Congregational Church, Newton Presbyterian Church, Second Church in Newton, The Union Church in Waban, and the United Parish of Auburndale.

Music director Jan Zimmerman directed 20 visitors and NHCC singers in a pick-up choir.

The cash offering of $562 was divided between the Centre Street Food Pantry and Newton Food Pantry.
