Want to make a personal difference by providing food for hungry people? We need volunteers to collect bread in Newton and deliver it to NHCC or to Pilgrim Church in Dorchester. All you need is a car and a little time!
Since 2004, NHCC volunteers have been picking up bread from Whole Foods Market in Newton just before closing and delivering it the next morning to the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Dorchester, where it goes to feed our neighbors in that community. Several years ago, an NHCC member crunched some numbers and calculated that we have delivered more than one million dollars worth of bread.
We need volunteers to
- Pick up bread from Whole Foods Market (916 Walnut Streets, Newton) and drop it at NHCC (54 Lincoln Street, Newton) for overnight storage
- Drive bread in the morning from NHCC to Pilgrim Congregational Church in Dorchester (540 Columbia Road, Boston)
- Do both
The USDA estimates that 30-40% of the food produced in the US is wasted, while Feeding America estimates that 1 in 11 people (and 1 in 10 children) in Massachusetts struggle with hunger.
