Annual Meeting 2023 includes heavenly beings, looks at the past and future, and pizza

Newton Highlands Congregational Church wrapped up 2022-23 with a congregational meeting in the Great Hall on June 4, 2023. The meeting began shortly after the worship service with a pizza-based potluck lunch.

Committee chairs; key volunteers; and Ken Baily, senior pastor; Wendy Donnell, director of Christian education; and Jan Zimmerman, music director, provided summaries of the past year and ideas for the coming year. All reports were approved. Moderator Sally Brickell presented her views on actions the church might take in order to improve in the coming year in a presentation entitled “From Vulnerable to Visionary.”

Treasurer Jim Harper presented a 2023-24 budget, which was approved. Church members will reconvene in October to review changes to the budget.

A highlight of the meeting was the awarding of cherub status to long-time member Carol Jensen, deeply appreciated for her years of service on the Worship & Spiritual Life Committee, Mission Committee, and Christian Education Committee, among others, along with her turn as moderator; and to recent member Isabelle Draper, who has become beloved during her three years on the Worship & Spiritual Life Committee.

Another highlight was the awarding of angel status to Peter Boberg. Mr. Boberg single-handedly staffs the bread run two night per week, sings in the senior choir, and brings his quiet dedication and intellect to the Parsonage Sale Committee.

In another piece of timely business, in order to permit the sale of the parsonage, members approved the following article: For the purposes of real estate transactions the Moderator of the church may be designated as president for all legal or corporate associated purposes, including for any filings with the Massachusetts Secretary of State. Additionally, for these purposes, the Moderator may also be designated as the director of the corporation.
