Sometimes I feel discouraged and think my work’s in vain,
but then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again.“There Is a Balm in Gilead”
In the Newton Highlands Congregational Church, UCC, worship service on September 21, 2025, both children and adults discussed the meaning of the hymn “There Is a Balm in Gilead.”
The Reverend Dr. Ken Baily talked about feeling powerless at times about things like global conflicts. He contrasted that with the realization that there are things one can do in one’s own life to help others. He reminded listeners that together church members donate ten percent of income to nonprofits and that even children get involved with monthly sandwich making for Community Day Center of Waltham.
“I am because we are,” he said, citing an African proverb.

For the postlude, organist Yevgenia Semeina played Sonata #3, 1st movement, by Felix Mendelssohn.
