Welcome the stranger from Afghanistan

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Hebrew 13:2

NHCC’s Mission Committee, led by Erica Hodes, and Reverend Ken Baily are working with Temple Shalom of Newton to support one or two families–perhaps eight to ten people–expected to arrive soon from Afghanistan; they are part of a group of about 900 people slated to come to Massachusetts.

How can you help?

We need the assistance of anyone at NHCC who is interested! Here are three ways you can help welcome these families.

  1. Donate funds for “Refugee Relief.” Our joint goal with Temple Shalom is to raise $40,000 to get two families through one year. We have raised $2,000 so far — thank you!
  2. Donate household items. We do not yet know what will be needed, but contact us to be placed on a list of potential donors.
  3. Represent NHCC at meetings with Temple Shalom and help organize the local effort. Contact us if you’re interested.

Other agencies involved include Jewish Family Service of Metrowest, Catholic Charities USA, and HIAS.

Perhaps all the Afghans who are coming here have helped the U.S. in some way. Almost all of them are English-speaking professionals of some sort. Unlike the Syrian assembly several years ago, almost all of them will be employed in about a year.  We’re helping them to get here safely, get a start and get a chance. Our involvement and our activities will change over time.

Please keep this process and these people in your prayers. This is important now and always, so keep it up. Thank you!
