Wisdom and welcome discussed on September 22

Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.

Mark 9:37

“What do we need this fall to be a wise, active church?”

Worshipers on Sunday, September 22, 2024, were asked by the Reverend Ken Baily to consider this question over the next two weeks.

In his meditation, the Reverend Baily spoke about wisdom (sophia), through which we hear a call to faith, and welcome, that is, Jesus’s expansive example, which demands “action beyond where we are already.” He added, “Welcome gets up and acts.”

“God longs for us to try new things all the time,” he concluded. “What does it mean to hear Jesus’ call to welcome?”

The service also included a children’s message about welcome by Director of Christian Education Wendy Donnell, with a pretzel welcome gift for each child.

For the postlude, organist Yevgenia Semeina played “On Our Way Rejoicing” (Marilyn Thompson).
