The Reverend Ken Baily and Ms. Sally Brickell, moderator, along with her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Kaplan, attended separate sessions of a Pilgrimage to Search for Truth and Justice in Montgomery and Selma, Alabama, in mid-October 2023.
After three preparatory Zoom sessions, participants from several Boston-area churches traveled with the Reverend June Cooper to see where enslaved people arrived in Montgomery and were sold, and to learn how they helped build this riverfront city.
The groups visited the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Civil Rights Memorial Center, the Equal Justice Institute’s Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice, stops along the path of the Selma-to-Montgomery March for voting rights, and the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
Participants prepared for the trip by reading The Inner Work of Racial Justice and The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism and met for daily discussions during the trip.
